Creating a résumé - Tips for IT applicants from a recruitment agency

Are you having trouble writing your résumé? We will show you what is important and what an optimal profile should look like.

What does the "optimal" résumé of an applicant look like? We believe it should be modern and to the point. Many résumés are either incomplete or long enough to resemble a novel.
In this article, you will get tips for your résumé that will make you interesting as an IT applicant.

What makes a good résumé?

Form is the be-all and end-all of a good resume. At the beginning should be your core data, such as phone number or email, followed directly by your professional expertise. The American résumé with its anti-chronological presentation has an advantage here. It lets the reader see your current experience at a glance. In the best case, it then continues with a list of further training and certifications that prove your experience.

Important: Certificates (including expired ones) and further training should always be listed in the CV with the date of the year, anti-chronologically.

A self-assessment of IT skills is not only beneficial, but essential. As an IT applicant, you should provide brief and concise information about your expertise in the respective skills. This can take the form of a short profile (+ for beginner, ++ for advanced, +++ for expert) or a percentage rating of your IT skills (e.g. Java = 60%). This will help us to better pre-qualify your profile and to find a suitable position/project for you more quickly. Your professional career, including a complete project history, should be summarized in such a way that it fits on no more than two pages. A good résumé is clear and to the point.

When stating language skills, refer to the European Framework of Reference for Languages, which assesses them in six levels. After the foreign language you indicate your corresponding language level with A1/2, B1/2 or C1/2. Whether you briefly mention hobbies and interests at the end of the résumé is up to you. These details are not a must-have, but can still earn you some brownie points.

Style and expressiveness for successful applications

"When you’re applying for a job with us, make that clear and convince us why you are the right person for the position and are eager for it. A generally formulated application has less chance of success. Be sure to address the right contact person in your application." This tip is from Paulo Lopes (Head of Recruitment), who has been part of our GECO team for 15 years. An up-to-date, personable application with a photo allows us to get a first impression of you and your skills.
